Lira and government leader in the Chamber disagree on the progress of the tax reform

The Speaker of the Chamber has stated that the issue is on the agenda in the first semester, but the deputy José Guimarães (PT-CE) has admitted that there is no way to vote on the proposal before the parliamentary recess

BRASÍLIA – After the approval of the new fiscal framework by the plenary of House of Representativeswith 372 votes in favor and 108 against, the President of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and the group leader in the Chamber, Jose Guimaraes (PT-EC), disagreed on the progress of tax reform. While Lira guaranteed the agenda to be placed in the first half of the year, Guimarães admitted he had no way of approving it until July.

Lira stated that the reform will be implemented in the first half of the year, but did not guarantee approval. “The tax reform is on the agenda of the Chamber in the first half of the year. Whether it is approved or not will depend on the plenary and the behavior of the top management,” she said. He has again stated that the tax and fiscal framework are national agendas.

“There is no way (vote) Why (the report) will be presented in June. Around 10, 15, then around July 15 recess starts. We’ve already done too much. Naturally, when the government transmits the text, we will work to approve it as soon as possible,” said Guimarães. “We will not vote on the tax reform in 15 days. If you do, vote, but we’re not stressed about that either.”

Guimarães also opposed the Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad. Previously, after meeting Lira, the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, and entrepreneurs, the director of the economic portfolio said he was convinced that the issue will be voted on in the House this semester, before the parliamentary suspension.
