Bad news for Netflix subscribers: account sharing now costs money!

It’s been hanging over Netflix subscribers for months, and now it’s over: the platform has ended password sharing. Account sharing was the main problem that the American giant revealed back in 2019, which caused it to lose a significant amount of money. Since then, Netflix has tried to fix this without changing the practices of users of the platform, which recently lost subscribers.

The pandemic gave subscribers a break, but reality quickly set in for the platform’s users, and Netflix launched its most radical and effective solution yet: the end of account sharing. After several tests carried out, especially in Canada, then false statements and apologies, this new measure is officially rolled out in France, the United States and more than a hundred countries.

It was through a tweet that the platform informed its subscribers of this rule: “Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with. New features in France will allow you to better manage your account.”

Subscribers also received an email informing them of this unprecedented change. And the platform will remind you that: “A Netflix account is intended for use by members of the same household. Anyone in that household can watch Netflix anywhere, at home, on the go or on vacation, and enjoy new features like profile transfer and access and device management.”.

What solutions are available to you if you still want to continue sharing your account with someone who is not a member of your family? Netflix offers two options:

  • You can transfer your profile: Anyone who uses your account can transfer their profile to a new subscription that they pay for themselves.
  • You can also add an additional subscriber: you can share your Netflix account with someone who does not live with you for an additional €5.99/month.

The announcement still comes with good news for subscribers worried about not being able to use their account while on vacation, as Netflix specified that “You can always watch your favorite series and movies while traveling”.

In addition, it seems that Netflix wants to reject or cancel the wave by challenging the competition and the desire to diversify content with this last paragraph:

“We know that there is a lot of entertainment to offer. That’s why we continue to invest in a wide range of series and films, so that our catalog suits every taste, every mood, every language and every audience.”

What are the implications of this new measure? Will the platform gain more subscribers than expected? We will have to wait for the coming days and weeks to begin to draw conclusions about the market leading platform’s practices with this radical change.
