Sniffer dogs boost Madeleine McCann research in Portugal

Police deployed heavy equipment and sniffer dogs on Wednesday, the second day of an operation at a remote dam in Portugal looking for evidence linking a German suspect to the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann 16 years ago.

Emergency services brought in a tractor-mounted remote-controlled tree cutter to clear what appeared to be a new search area, just a few hundred meters from a temporary camp erected on the banks of the Arade dam on Tuesday by Portuguese police, aided by Germans and British colleagues.

Dozens of police were concentrating their searches on the bank of the dam and a hill above it, and it wasn’t clear whether they would use divers to search the water.

McCann was 3 years old in May 2007 when he disappeared from his bedroom in the flat where his family were staying at the Praia da Luz resort on the Algarve coast. The dam is about 50 km from the site.

“I hope they find something so parents can rest easy,” said Gert, a 49-year-old Dane who lives in the same building where McCann disappeared.

Last year, German prosecutors named Christian Brueckner an official suspect in McCann’s disappearance. He is behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve region from which McCann disappeared.

He denied any involvement in the disappearance.

The McCann case remains a mystery as no bodies have been found. This has sparked a media frenzy in the UK, with developments in the case also followed by vehicles around the world and celebrities joining calls to help find Madeleine.
