‘Succession’: Theories about the end of the fourth season

How will the series end? Let’s turn to Reddit, the Internet’s thinking machine.

succession will air its final episode this weekend with a spectacular 90-minute episode announcing sibling feuds and backstabbing in business. In the trailer of the last chapter of successionRoy’s sons are confronted by Swedish billionaire Lukas Matsson (Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd), who tells them to fasten their seatbelts because “this is going to get ugly.”

From what we’ve seen so far this season, succession it could really end either way. Following the death of Logan Roy (Brian Cox), we already had the big “succession” that the series was heading towards when Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) were named co-CEOs. Will they keep their titles if the GoJo deal goes through? Will someone else come out on top, like Shiv (Sarah Snook), Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) or Greg (Nicholas Braun)? And Connor (Alan Ruck)? It’s hard to say, but the stakes are high on the series finale for creator Jesse Armstrong and HBO. Will it be enough to choose a true successor and reveal the fate of WayStar RoyCo, or are they working for something bigger? We will know soon.

For now, let’s see what Reddit thinks. It’s the fan theory capital of the internet, and with good reason. One commenter predicted last week that Roman would break down emotionally at Logan’s funeral, and another got it right that ATN would falsely advertise Mencken’s election. If someone is going to hit the end of successionIt’s these people.

Kendall gets everything she wants, doesn’t she?

A very popular refrain that I see in users of r/SuccessionTV it’s the theory that Kendall will gain control and become CEO of WayStar RoyCo, but lose everything – including his family and personal happiness – in the process. He would also control a company that needed to be bought out to survive, and is now just putting out fires every day. As I predicted earlier, running the Death Star may not be all the Empire wants. After last night’s episode, most people are against either Shiv or Roman, but their banners are still flying high.

The Roys exit, enter Tom Wambsgans

Tom seems to be walking a bit of a tightrope due to both his toxic relationship with Shiv and his tarnished reputation as President of the ATN after the election. However, some Reddit users claim that all these potential hiccups are nothing more than hoaxes. According to u/PlutoMMA, Tom will end up being the General Manager. “Matsson believes Mencken agreed with an American CEO, but I have a strong feeling one or both of them don’t want it to be Shiv,” they wrote. “Tom knows ATN, it would be easier to master.” A decent theory, honestly! I could easily see how it plays out when all the Roy brothers lose and the misogyny of evil guys like Matsson and Mencken gives way to choosing Tom over Shiv. That guy has turned into a demon lately. Same as his subordinate to him, Greg.

    Scandal? Murder?

Many (too many?) of the commentators on r/SuccessionTV they want blood. They want scandal, they want murder, and I can’t blame them. Sometimes you have to give it a spicy touch. But succession he has largely kept the human cost of the Roy family’s dirty dealings out of the question. Sure, Roman blew up a rocket and Kendall accidentally killed some guy in a car accident, but nobody’s ever killed each other for their own benefit until now. Are they saving a big crime for last? “I don’t think Jesse Armstrong wants you to worry about it,” the user posted. u/QuietRainyDay. “We’ve seen the kids make so many terrible decisions, and yet here they are, rich and powerful enough to influence a presidential election. That’s what’s scary. The shocking part. That’s what should make you uncomfortable.” . It seems fair to me.

Maybe this is not the end

As pointed out by a user named u/cold_breadfruit_9794: “It’s hard to completely predict because I think Jesse Armstrong likes to leave the more unpredictable twists until the end. All I know is that it’s going to be open-ended enough that it feels like there could be another season.”

Totally possible! Although this looks like the end of succession, everyone seems to agree that ending in season four seemed too soon. There’s also been a lot of talk about potential spin-offs, as HBO might have a hard time saying goodbye to one of its most popular series of the past decade. We will know very soon, this Sunday.
