Director Todd Haynes revealed in an interview during the Cannes Film Festival that his next film will star the Oscar winner jokerJoaquin Phoenix, and that it is a gay costume novel.
The film, which is expected to shoot in early 2024, will take place in the 1930s and will tell the story of the love between two men. Haynes described the script as bold and original, making it Phoenix’s first gay role. The director expressed his enthusiasm for the project, which was presented to him by the actor himself.
In a separate interview with Indiewire, Haynes revealed that the film will be rated NC-17, meaning it will be aimed at an 18+ audience and will have a script co-developed with Phoenix and Jon Raymond. The director highlighted Phoenix’s participation as a co-author of the story, emphasizing the actor’s influence in delving into the plot. The film will be set in Los Angeles in the 1930s.
