Lula announces ‘popular car’ this Thursday in Brasilia; market waiting for a drop in prices

Rental companies and consumers hold purchases in anticipation of an announcement; measures to reduce prices were to be presented at an event at Fiesp, but the agenda was changed

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announces this Thursday 25, at 10, the expected package of measures to bring back to the market what the president has defined “popular car”, in fact, cheaper models than the current ones, today with prices starting from R$ 69,000. In recent days, the new vehicle market, which showed growth in the first six months compared to April, has practically stopped waiting for a reduction in prices.

Most rental companies, which now account for 43% of total car sales, have stopped placing orders. They are seen as an important market for more relaxed models, sought mainly by those who work with applications. The second-hand segment also recorded a slowdown in activity, as any change in the price of new cars also affects used cars, according to the leaders of the automotive sector.

Lula will make the announcement in Brasilia, next to the vice president, Gerald Alckmin, who is also Minister of Development (MDIC), the department that coordinated discussions with automakers for the package. According to some industry representatives, however, the measures could fall short of expectations.

Previously, the announcement had to be made at the headquarters of the Fiesp, in São Paulo, during the celebration of Industry Day. Lula will be present only at 17, for the closure of the event. The reason for the change in plans was not explained.

According to the information provided by the people participating in the discussions, among the measures evaluated – probably not all approved – there are tax cuts such as IPI and ICMS, facilitation actions credit access and the use of part of FGT extension as a guarantee for the payment of installments or as part of the payment for the new car.

The president’s decision to make the announcement at Palazzo Planalto, and not at Fiesp, caused the institution to change its programme. The presence of Lula, Alckmin and Minister Fernando Haddad was scheduled for the morning, but was moved to the late afternoon.

The only one of the group initially scheduled for the event and who will be in the Fiesp office all day is the president of the BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante.

Measures are envisaged for the whole sector, many of which are linked to programs of development banks, such as the reduction of the cost of financing (financing) with remuneration by the TLP (Long Term Rate), creation of a letter of credit for development (LCD), BNDES financing lines linked to other indicators, such as the Selic rate and the dollar.
