Arnold Schwarzenegger on Netflix: Is the return of the Terminator star a success?

What are you doing?

When father and daughter learn that they have been working undercover for the CIA for years, they realize that their entire relationship is a lie and they don’t know each other at all. Forced to team up, this unlikely duo undertakes dangerous missions on the international espionage scene.

who is he with

Everyone knows the name Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bodybuilder, movie superstar, governor of California… the Austrian native’s determination allowed him to live his wildest dreams, and today it is as the translator of the TV series that the movie icon returns to us after 75 years of action.

While he has spent most of his career in movies, Schwarzenegger has also made some memorable appearances on television. In particular, in an episode of the series Les Rues de San Francisco at its beginning, or more recently in the sitcom Mon oncle Charlie. Also note his role in the episode Exchange Tales from the Crypt, directed by himself.

Next to him, Monica Barbaro plays Emma, the main character’s daughter. The reveal of Top Gun Maverick in this case proves his ease with the action scenes, and his father/daughter duo with Schwarzenegger work quite well.

The shock team that accompanies the two heroes of the series consists of the bad Travis Van Winkle, Milan Carter in the skin of the computer genius Barry, or the comedian Fortune Feimster (Dear Whites) as the rough shaper Ruth.

The big bad of the Boro series is played by Gabriel Luna. Well known to fans of The Last of Us, the Texan actor has previously crossed paths with Arnold Schwarzenegger while filming Terminator: Dark Fate.

Is it worth checking out?

After Sylvester Stallone in Tulsa King, Arnold Schwarzenegger becomes the star of the series. Sworn enemies of the 80s, the two action movie superstars have since buried their hatches to collaborate on more than one occasion, most notably in the Expendables trilogy.

In cinema, both of them portrayed two visions of the action hero. For Schwarzenegger, the model of a warrior as invincible and ruthless as a machine, while Stallone always wanted to emphasize the humanity of his characters.

Their careers are also marked by Schwarz’s willingness to work with famous cinematographers (James Cameron, Paul Verhoeven, John McTiernan), while Sly always preferred to work with lesser-known directors in order to maintain more control over the films than he did.

Schwarzenegger has a message to get across

A trend that completely reversed for their TV debut. Although Stallone was surrounded by two prestigious screenwriters, Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire) and Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone), it is under the direction of Nick Santora (Scorpion) that Schwarzenegger opens his first series: Fubar.

With this action comedy, the former governor of California seems to have two goals. First of all, connecting with the tone of 90s entertainment cinema (Schwarz compares the series to his film True Lies). but also the study of the more autobiographical part and especially the discussion of his family problems.

Fubar’s main character’s attempt to redeem himself in the eyes of his daughter, but also in the eyes of his ex-wife, is reminiscent of Schwarzenegger’s personal failure, which leads to a divorce after his extramarital affairs are revealed (and the birth of an illegitimate child).

It is difficult to understand if the latter wanted to shoot it with this series it’s my faultOr, on the contrary, provide justification for his misconduct. “It’s none of our business” Quoting a famous sketch from Strangers, though, this autobiographical aspect of the series is rare enough in Schwarzenegger’s career to emphasize.

Where did the “real” Schwarzenegger go?

Clearly designed just for Schwarzenegger fans, Fubar fails to strike the right balance between comedy and action. The episodes are too long (an average of 50 minutes), and the dialogues are lazy and clumsy, never involving the famous punchlines that made his greatest films so successful.

Schwarzenegger is ten years younger in the series. But while Illusion was successful in Expendables, surrounded by other “grandfathers” of the action, the latter makes the mistake of collaborating with young actors, which will only emphasize his age. Advanced (75 years).

In the end, his character spends more time in the mechanics than in supporting images to prove to us that he is indeed a tough secret agent.

Schwarzenegger, aka Grandpa Gun

We cannot say that Fubar will leave a stain in the filmography of the former bodybuilder. If not at all successful, the series is not entirely disgraceful. But the real disappointment will not be to see pure Schwarz on the screen, but a more refined and ordinary version.Action hero Worship.

Viewers can only think nostalgically about the blockbusters of the 90s, but Fubar seems to confirm once and for all that that era is now completely over. Looking too much in the rear-view mirror, the series wants to be nostalgic, but unfortunately ends up trapped in old-fashionedness.

The first season of Fubar with Arnold Schwarzenegger is now available on Netflix.
