20 ingredients behind whose names hide sugar in products: beware!

Often on the packaging of confectionery, pastries, dairy products and other healthy goodies, manufacturers indicate in large letters: “Sugar-free”. However, sugar does enter into the composition of these products. It’s just that we do not even suspect that he is hiding behind these beautiful and “healthy” names.

Every year, consumers are becoming more and more negative about sugar in the composition of products. Nevertheless, brands cannot refuse it and enhance their products: at least because sugar is an excellent preservative, and its taste is so attractive that sales are progressing by leaps and bounds.

That’s why manufacturers have long learned the insidious trick: write on the packaging that there is no sugar in the composition of the products.

Indeed, in most cases, such an inscription on the label means that you will not find refined white sugar in the composition. But other sweet additives – easily! And we’re not talking about “zero” calorie sugar substitutes. Much more often, manufacturers add sugar alternatives from this list to products.

  • barley malt

  • Dextrose

  • Glucose

  • Fructose

  • Maltose

  • Syrup

  • Jerusalem artichoke syrup

  • Maple syrup

  • brown sugar

  • palm sugar

  • Cane sugar

  • coconut sugar

  • Caramel

  • date syrup

  • corn syrup

  • agave nectar

  • fruit juice concentrate

  • Nawat (nabat)

  • hydrolyzed starch

  • Dear

Most of these white sugar alternatives are considered healthier and are even recommended for weight loss. However, in general, their composition does not differ much from standard sugar and depends mainly on the purity of the product: you see, finding high-quality honey without impurities is not an easy task.

Additionally, some substitutes are higher in calories than regular sugar. For example, the calorie content of granulated sugar is 380 kcal per 100 grams, and palm sugar is almost 400 kcal/100 g.

Finally, some sugar alternatives are considered more dangerous in terms of tooth decay. Thus, gourmands should not get carried away by maple syrup and caramel.

As you can see, if you want to eat sugar-free foods, it’s best to memorize this dangerous list and check the foods against the names above. Ideally, the composition should not contain alternative sugars, but high quality sweeteners: such as trehalose, stevia and erythritol.
