Lewis Hamilton applauds Vini Jr. after racism in Spain: ‘incredibly brave’

The Formula 1 driver recalls the moments in which he had to face similar situations and regrets that this happened in 2023

Before the first training sessions for the Monaco Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton commented on yet another case of racism experienced by wines jr. during the game of Spanish league. According to the seven-time world champion driver, the position of the Brazilian striker is one of incredible courage.

“It’s devastating to think that in 2023 we have yet to see and hear these things. It brings me emotions from things I’ve experienced, whether it’s in the UK or at races in Italy, France or Spain. The things people say can be very painful I think he was incredibly brave,” the pilot said in a conversation with the press in Monaco.

During his career in Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton has established himself as one of the symbols in the fight against all kinds of discrimination in motorsport. In recent seasons, although the FIA (International Automobile Federation) has created rules that restrict the positioning possibilities of the drivers, Hamilton does not stop saying what he thinks of all the topics to try to reduce prejudices.

Lewis Hamilton has also suffered from racism in Spain. During the 2008 season, when the Briton was at McLaren alongside Fernando Alonso, Hamilton was insulted while testing the car at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. In recent seasons wearing the Real Madrid shirt, Vini Jr. already adds 10 cases of racism reported in LaLiga.

Understanding the case of Vini Jr.

The Brazilian Vinícius Júnior has once again been a victim of racism in Spain. A section of the Valencia fans, who faced and beat Real Madrid 1-0 on Sunday, shouted racist insults aimed at the Brazilian player in the second part of the match, which was interrupted and then restarted by the referee for the infractions.

Furthermore, the Brazilian, rebelled and destabilized by his rivals, was sent off after an argument with striker Hugo Duro, who hit him in the arm. He got a yellow card, but after reviewing the VAR’s offer, he was sent off for arbitration.

The episode sparked the Real Madrid revolt, whose coach Carlo Ancelotti dedicated his entire press conference to talking about the case of racism after the match. The controversy then increased when the president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, criticized Vinícius for complaining about the body’s attitude towards cases of racism.

There are many incidents of racial prejudice against Vini Jr. Recently, the Brazilian testified before the Spanish court in the context of the case in which he was called a “monkey” by a Mallorca fan in February this year. “It wasn’t the first time, nor the second nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga. The competition thinks it’s normal, even the federation does it and the opponents encourage it. I’m very sorry. The league that once belonged to Ronaldinho , Ronaldo, Cristiano and Messi today belongs to racists” the athlete said on his Twitter profile.

The Brazilian also warned against the image Spain passes abroad by allowing such attacks to take place in the nation’s biggest sporting competition. “A beautiful nation, which has welcomed me and which I love, but which has agreed to export the image of a racist country to the world. I am sorry for the Spaniards who do not agree, but today, in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists”.
