Without a doubt, one of the great premieres that Crunchyroll has prepared for us this 2023 and the first rookie to gain our attention among so many veteran star anime.
Anime fans know that 2023 is set to be a dream year. We have seen ‘Suzume’, a new film by Makoto Shinkai, and soon we will have the return of the master Hayao Miyazaki with ‘How do you live?’. But it is that on television the thing is already crazy. This year we will have season 2 of ‘Spy X Family’, season 2 of ‘Jujutsu kaisen’, the final season of ‘Attack on Titan’, a new anime with new Pokemon protagonists’ after the goodbye of Ash and Pikachu, season 3 of ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’, season 2 of ‘Vinland Saga’… And I’m leaving a lot of things along the way because this can’t be eternal, but it goes without saying that ‘One Piece’ continues to sweep the anime waiting for its live-action on Netflix and, hell, even ‘Boruto: Naruto Next Generations’ has ended in a way that has made us doubt if the story of the son of the legendary ninja was really so mediocre.
With all that, it was difficult for a debuting anime to even gain the attention of the public. Last year ‘Chainsaw Man’ did it and this year the so-called 2023 revelation anime did too It has the seal of Mappa (‘Attack on Titan’, ‘Chainsaw Man’, ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’, ‘Vinland Saga’, etc). We talk, of course, about ‘Hell’s Paradise’, also called by its catchy original name, ‘Jigokuraku’.
The anime, based on Yuji Kaku’s manga, is available on Crunchyroll Spain, where it debuted at the beginning of April and where eight of the 13 episodes that will make up this first installment are already available. Tells us the story of the call Gabimaru the Void, the strongest ninja in the world, captured and sentenced to death. There is only one problem, Gabimaru is so strong that no executioner manages to kill him and carry out his sentence. Not long in coming the beautiful enforcer Sagiri, a master swordsman of the Asaemon clan to cut his throat. However, as soon as she discovers something from her past, she offers him a deal. Condemned and executioner form a couple to go to a forbidden island where it is said that the elixir of immortality is found. If he succeeds, they will give him a pardon. The problem isn’t just that a bunch of other incredibly strong Doomed Assassins and their Asaemon are also on the island, seeing them as their rivals, it’s that insanely powerful enemies, monsters, and angels stand in their way to the elixir.
And up to here we want to read, because of course that kind of paradise in the form of an island awaits many surprises, but also each one of the more or less secondary characters that populate it, especially the rest of the criminals and Asaemon. Also, of course, we keep information and evolution of the relationship between the two protagonists. After all, this is an anime that is taking its first steps. However, its success is evident after a few hooking first chapters and, although it seems to slow down afterwards, it becomes one of those stories that wants to be chewed rather than devoured. Mappa’s animation, as usual, is as exquisite as the music in its openings. All around an adult, visceral, bloody, sexual and beautiful anime.
It will be difficult for this debuting anime to steal the spotlight from ‘Hell’s Paradise’ and its weekly premiere on Crunchyroll this 2023.
