Loyalty can do wonderful things when you’re in show business. That kind of confidence can only get you so far, though, and those limits have apparently been tested at Warner Bros. with new CEO David Zaslav looking to cut fat and cancel production. upcoming movie In the studio, his pragmatic approach to running the company is fully effective. That’s why he supposedly he wasn’t very happy when he discovered the Clint Eastwood flop male shouts it was made even though executives thought it would not be a box office success.
An initial meeting between Zaslav and other studio executives would have revealed this. In a comedy directed by The the Wall Street newspaperit was said that Warner Bros. Brass allowed male shouts be done despite an alleged loss of millions. The reasons? Apparently Eastwood wasn’t just a prominent actor / director who gave the studio blockbusters like the dirty Harry film and unforgivable, he never exceeded the budget and was always on time. David Zaslav, not impressed with this answer, responded with the following:
We don’t owe anyone any favors. It’s not ‘show friends’, it’s ‘show business’.
This statement is even more powerful given the clear doubts as to how male shouts he would have performed at the box office turned out to be perfect. Even with a small budget of $ 33 million, Clint Eastwood’s latest film only grossed about $ 15.5 million when it hit theaters. This probably didn’t help male shouts debuted simultaneously on HBO Max as part of the series of films that tested the waters for the future of cinematic exploitation.
After the recent merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery completed, David Zaslav immediately got to work cleaning up. Zaslav not only canceled the wonderful twins movie, but he also stopped scripting programming on TNT and TBS.. Although he is a strong believer in the courtship of talent that brought glory to the Warner Bros. lot, the above profile shows David citing a commercial mantra that Tom Cruise fans Jerry Maguire are familiar with:
David Zaslav’s entrepreneurial approach at Warner Bros. probably wonders how far brand loyalty and personalities go in terms of decision making. This is a particularly powerful question when considering the recently announced meeting between Zaslav and Magic world franchise creator JK Rowling. with the last two fantastic beasts underperforming movies at the box office, at least compared to previous franchise efforts, this split could be significant in a post-Harry Potter world. In fact, it’s probably the most important factor in deciding whether or not they’ll be at Fantastic Beasts 4 in theaters or on HBO Max.
The power of loyalty is an argument that works both ways, even in the Warner lot. In the pre-Zaslav era, we saw the proven and ultimately broken link between the studio and Christopher Nolan. 2021 simulcast experience led Nolan to break up with Warner Bros., postponing his next film Oppenheimer compete with Universal studio. Although David Zaslav apparently thinks the studio doesn’t owe the favors of its creators, I guess losing the director could still hurt.
A new day is dawning at Warner Bros. and I’m curious to see where this new regime will lead. However, if you haven’t seen male shouts This is Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s SecretsBoth films are currently streaming on the HBO Max platform. Meanwhile, Warner Bros’ next cinematic marketing test will be that of Baz Luhrmann. Elvis, fresh from his polarizing debut at Cannes. This film will be released in theaters on June 24th.
