Box office: The Little Mermaid makes its US debut

Raising $117.5 million in four days, The little Mermaid debuted at the top in U.S. theaters, establishing itself as the fifth-highest-grossing Memorial Day holiday in U.S. history.

Even if the success has displaced Fast and furious 10which launches the sequel to the Vin Diesel franchise in second place in the weekend chart, the numbers seem to be very different when it comes to the international market.

Criticisms aimed at what should be an inspiring children’s film, as well as the visual glitches and the introduction of new features that are not part of the original. While the international debut wasn’t as impactful as expected, it wasn’t as surprising either. In five of its main markets, The little Mermaid lifted up:

Considering an international box office of just $68.3 million, that represents an estimated $163.8 million global opening through Sunday (28), below forecasts of $180 million.

Directed by Rob Marshall, The little Mermaid is one of Disney’s most anticipated live-action films, being based on the original 1989 classic by Hans Christian Andersen. Starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, it hits theaters on May 26 and, in addition to Bailey, stars Daveed Diggs, Javiar Bardem, Jacob Tremblay, Melissa McCarthy, Jonah Hauer-King and Awkwafina.
