It’s over. After four seasons and lots of backstabbing and secret deals, HBO’s mega-hit ‘Succession’ has come to an end. The Roy brothers (Kendall, Shiv and Roman), have been fighting among themselves over whether Lukas Matsson should take over Waystar Royco.
In the finale, we got to see the brothers come together to try to kill the deal for a short period of time. However, her childish fights brought out her malice again, and Shiv’s swing vote caused GoJo to buy Waystar, placing her husband, Tom Wambsgans, as US CEO. Something that supposes a total change in the dynamic of power of her.
The creator of the series, Jesse Armstrong insists this is the end, but has revealed what the future holds for the trio of brothers, now that they have lost their father’s company.
In a behind-the-scenes report, Armstrong explains that Roman is back to square one., and that this “stupid playboy” would call this whole experience a “mishap”; next to her, Shiv is trapped in a “quite a scary, frozen and emotionally barren place” now that her husband, who she doesn’t even like, runs her father’s company.
“He has that kind of no victory and no defeat“, Add. “It sounds like it’s going to be hard for them to progress emotionally, given the things they’ve said to each other.“.
As for Kendall, who has been very close to becoming the new Logan Roy, in terms of position and how he treats Roman and Shiv in the finale:
“Maybe he could go ahead and start a company or do something, but the chances of him achieving the kind of corporate status his father achieved are very slim, and I think that will mark his whole life,” concludes Armstrong.
It also explains why Tom becoming CEO of Waystar has been “the proper ending“to the spirit of the series, stating that although his power comes from Matsson, he is the type to “man who does thrive in this corporate world“.
