Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse: Who Are the New Heroes in This Marvel Sequel?

What is it about? After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man, a friendly hero from Brooklyn, is catapulted into the multiverse, where he meets a team of Spider-Heroes tasked with protecting his existence. But as the heroes face off against a new threat, Miles finds himself up against them and must decide what it means to be a hero in order to save the people he loves most.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and grossed nearly $385 million worldwide. So the bar was set high for this sequel.

“The first game was a huge challenge and the team worked on it until the last minute. We started thinking about the second chapter as soon as we finished the first one in 2018. Of course, Phil Lord And Chris Miller knew the direction we were going with this story from the beginning.explains Christine Belson, president of Sony Pictures Animation.

He notes that the artists at Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks went to great lengths to surpass the mastery of the first film: “What really challenged us was to try to go further visually than in the previous film, and we, for example, included 2D elements in the animation that respect the graphic style of the comics. In this new opus, we go even deeper. Spider-Verse, which allowed us to explore several animation styles and create even more meaningful settings than the first chapter.”

In the end, the film unfolds in 6 dimensions, includes 240 characters and required the work of 1000 animators.

Among the new characters that audiences will see in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are:

• Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman from Earth-332. “Every young girl wanted to be Gwen since the first movie came out, and now every mom wants to be Jessica Drew.”– says producer Chris Miller. Director Kemp Powers adds: “She’s obviously pregnant when she’s fighting crime and she’s really tough. She’s the only Spider-Man who doesn’t lead a double life and can come off as who she is, and that means she really has style.”
• Pavitr Prabhakar: This Indian version of Spider-Man – and a completely original one – first appeared on the album. Spider: India, by Sharad Devarajan, Suresh Zeetaraman and Jeevan J. by Kang dating back to January 2005. Pavitri lives in Mumbai, a futuristic and sprawling crossroads between Manhattan and Mumbai on Earth-50101. He wasn’t bitten by a radioactive spider, but he got his powers from a mystical shaman.
• Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Punk, is a member of a rock band. He comes from a world that is a strange mix of the London rock scene of the 70s and 80s and modern New York. He uses his guitar as both an instrument and a weapon.
• May “Mayday” Parker: First appeared on the album What if…? #107 In December 1997, May “Mayday” Parker is the first child of Peter and Mary Jane Parker in an alternate future universe.
• Dr. Jonathan Oni, aka Laka, appeared on the album Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #98 in January 1985. Created by Al Milgrom and Herb Trimpe, Ohnn, in the Spider-Verse, is a scientist who uses occult powers to create portals to other worlds while working for the Kingpin.

New artistic team

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continues the adventures of Miles Morales, a hero of African-American and Puerto Rican descent, created by comic book writers Brian Michael Bendis and Sarah Pichel in 2011. The three directors this time are Joaquim dos Santos (director and executive producer of The Legend of Korra, Avatar, The Last Airbender and Voltron, the Legendary Defender), Camp Powers (writer and co-director of Soul) and Justin K. Thompson (Spider-Man: The Next Generation and Clody with a Chance of Meatballs producer Phil Lord and Chris Miller return to produce and also co-write the film.
