The textual genre is charged in the Enem test and in some public tenders. Know its features and see the tips
Argumentative dissertation writing is one that presents arguments and sets out ideas about a topic. This type of text is required in several entrance exams, including Fuvest (linked to USP) and Enem, as well as in public competitions and selection processes, to evaluate the different capabilities of candidates.
In the National High School Examination (Enem), it is also necessary that the argumentative essay presents a proposal for social intervention for the problem presented in the development of the text. This proposal must respect human rights.
What should essay-argumentative writing be like?
According to the National Institute of Studies and Research on Education Anísio Teixeira (Inep), in this paper the candidate must defend a point of view – an opinion on the proposed topic -, supported by coherent arguments, structured with coherence and cohesion, forming a textual unit.
It is important that the candidate always uses the standard norm of the Portuguese language in the text.
The main features of the essay-argumentative essay are:
• Presence of your point of view – in general, in the first paragraph of the text;
• Development of the text with arguments that prove the thesis raised;
• Conclusion in the form of a synthesis or with proposed solutions to the problems presented;
• Although the text is based on your point of view, it should be written in the third person.
How to start writing
The beginning of the argumentative drafting of the thesis must contain the presentation of the theme and the explanation of the thesis, i.e. the candidate’s position on the proposed topic.
How to do development
In the intermediate paragraphs the candidate will have to deepen the arguments presented in the introduction, in order to support his point of view. In developing, the candidate can use relevant data, historical facts, cultural repertoire and arguments.
How to conclude an argumentative essay
The conclusion can be done by synthesis, in which the candidate summarizes the arguments and reinforces the validity of the thesis presented. Another possibility is the conclusion with proposed solutions, where it is necessary to go back to the problems presented in the argumentation and propose interventions to address the problem under discussion.
In this case, the suggested solutions must be detailed, highlighting points such as: who will be responsible for promoting the solution, what actions are needed to combat the problem, how the proposed improvements or changes will be implemented and what are the objectives of the indicated interventions .

In his song “Pela Internet”, the Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil praises the amount of information made available by digital platforms to their users. However, with the advancement of algorithms and data control mechanisms developed by application companies and social networks, this abundance has been limited and news and cultural products have increasingly been targeted – a current situation capable of shape user habits and information. Therefore, such manipulation of user behavior by prior data selection is inconceivable and deserves a more critical look at the comparison.
First, it is worth recognizing how this above scenario can limit one’s citizenship. In this regard it is pertinent to report the speech of the philosopher Jürgen Habermas, in which he conceptualizes the communicative action: this consists in the ability of a person to defend his own interests and demonstrate what he believes is best for the community, demanding extensive information. Thus, knowing that citizenship consists in the struggle for social welfare, if the subjects do not have full knowledge of the reality in which they are inserted and of how their neighbor can enjoy the common good – since their sources of information are addressed – they will not be able to assume full defense for the collective. Therefore, the manipulation of behavior cannot be accepted even in the name of fighting individualism and zeal for the good of the group.
Secondly, it is worth noting that the control of data on the Internet goes against the postmodern conception of the individual. This is because, according to the post-structuralist philosopher Stuart-Hall, the subject inserted in postmodernity is endowed with multiple identities. Therefore, people’s preferences and ideas are in constant interaction, which can be limited by the previous selection of information, advertising, products, among others. Finally, it would be remiss not to notice how such algorithms’ attempt to create cultural universes suited to the user’s taste creates a false sense of free will and hinders the multiple interests and identities a subject might assume.
Therefore, measures are needed to mitigate this problem. Therefore, educational institutions are responsible for the digital education and empowerment of their students, with the aim of making them aware of the mechanisms used by new communication and information technologies and making them more critical. This can be done by tackling the issue, starting from elementary school – since generations are increasingly immersed in the reality of new technologies – in a playful and age-appropriate way, following teacher training on new media. Furthermore, through lectures with IT professionals who explain how students can expand their media outlets and demonstrate how to deal with such selectivities, a path will be charted for an empowered society.
