Ted Lasso, it’s over! How does the series end?

Warning, spoilers. The following paragraphs detail the plot of the latest episode of Ted Lasso’s series, available on Apple TV+ and via myCANAL. If you haven’t seen it yet and don’t want to know anything about its content, I suggest you stop reading immediately.

Launching on Apple TV+ in August 2020, Ted Lasso is a series that has taken everyone by surprise. The sitcom, co-created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, quickly won over its audience thanks to its lovable characters, friendliness and good spirit.

The series, winner of 8 Emmy Awards and 2 Golden Globes, tells the story of Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), an American football coach who is developed by Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), the owner of a fictional football team. English in the very real world of sport.

Rebecca’s goal is to get revenge on her ex-husband, Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head), owner of West Ham United. Although he has no experience in football (soccer for Americans), Ted Lasso tries to accept his new boss, his new British companions and the new players thanks to optimism, determination and kindness.

After two seasons of ups and downs, successes and failures, Ted Lasso’s third season is the best season for AFC Richmond. The team managed to secure a place in the Premier League and in the final episode they had to face the enemy team, West Ham United.

The long awaited game

So the stakes are high for AFC Richmond, as ex-France international and now Arsenal consultant and commentator Thierry Henry recalls, returning to the series to score a header for his grand final.

And for this long-awaited match, everyone went home. So Nathan Shelley (Nick Muhammad), having spent time with the Enemy, returns to AFC Richmond as an Assistant Attendant, much to the delight of Teddy and the team. As is Keeley Jones (Juno Temple), who is still taking care of the team’s communications thanks to the agency saved by Rebecca.

If this match against West Ham United is important for the team, it is also important for Ted, who has decided to return to his homeland in the United States to be with his son. So these are his last moments with this British “family” who adopted the coach. Together with coach Bird (Brendan Hunt), Ted has put together a slightly silly but oh so touching video of the team’s best moments.

Which brings tears to every player seconds before the start of the match. The sadness of their coach’s departure caused AFC Richmond Greyhounds to run wild during the first half. Then comes the closing speech with Ted Lasso Sauce giving the players hope.

Bolstered by Teddy’s speech, the players take a page from the famous “Trust me” sign, the coach’s mantra, which he has torn anyway. Time is no longer full, but in the second half, which must be seized when West Ham United already have two goals.

Fortunately, striker Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) and captain Isaac McAdoo (Kola Bokin), as a result of a space penalty, equalized for West Ham. After much doubt, the rescue comes from Sam Obisania (Tohib Jimoh) who scores the 3rd goal to give AFC Richmond a win over West Ham United.

All’s well that ends well

Despite the win against West Ham United, after the Ellipse we learn that AFC Richmond were beaten by Manchester City and that the Greyhounds finished 2nd in the Premier League, which is already a miracle.

Whatever the case, everyone walks away a winner in this final episode of Ted Lasso. After Teddy’s emotional departure from the airport, Rebecca discovers her big crush from Amsterdam, Roy Kent becomes the new manager of AFC Richmond and begins therapy, Jamie Tartt finally connects with his father and Sam Obisania realizes his dream of playing for the national team in Nigeria. .

Even Coach Bird (who goes by Willis!) finds his happy ending as he ends up staying in England to spend happy days with his sweetheart Jane (Phoebe Walsh), whom he is about to marry! For their part, Rebecca and Keely have created a crazy, ambitious project in their own image: to create a women’s team at AFC Richmond.

Additionally, Trent Crim (James Lance), a former journalist for The Independent who followed AFC Richmond throughout the season, published his book The Richmond Method, originally titled The Lasso Method, which the coach changed after he remembered. that “This story was never about him”. Like Jason Sudeikis’ subliminal message reminding us that Ted Lasso isn’t just about him, but about all the other equally important characters.

And in the end, the bad guys lose. This is the case of Rupert Mannion, Rebecca’s ex and owner of West Ham United, whom the world is finally seeing in his true light, following allegations of sexual harassment by his former assistant in his divorce from his last wife. and his violence and abuse of power towards staff, as evidenced by his behavior towards the West Ham manager mid-match.

Goodbye Ted!

So yes, the Ted Lasso series ends, as in fairy tales and romantic comedies, with a happy ending and a resolution that is both happy and satisfying. It also brings a conclusion to all its characters and closes the main plots with sequence and richness.

Billed as the final salvo of episodes, Ted Lasso Season 3 — despite doubts about a potential fourth installment — certainly completes the magnanimous coach’s arc. The title of this last episode “So Long, Farewell” already announced the color of this farewell, which the players of the team sang with emotion to Ted.

We thank the co-creators and screenwriters for thinking about the series for 3 seasons and fulfilling their plan. It would be terrible if a series as special as Ted Lasso didn’t have an ending that lived up to its stature, or worse, if it dragged on longer than it needed to. Moreover, the last sequence of the final episode is a message from Jason Sudeikis to the viewers and fans of the series.

We see Teddy cheering on his son Henry during a football game (football across the Atlantic) during the action on the field. Unfortunately, he misses the chance to score. After letting go of the shot, Henry goes to Ted, who tells him not to worry and reminds him to say goldfish.

This term implies that we should forget, popular belief suggests that an animal’s memory is not very good and that we should go back and move on. After Teddy tells his son to go back and have fun.

This last sequence, ending with a close-up of Teddy’s face that still leaves a bit of a bitter aftertaste of saying goodbye to one of the sweetest recent characters on the small screen.

It’s like Jason Sudeikis’ final farewell, telling the audience to forget it, move on and get over it, but also not be afraid to jump back into the show and have fun again. And again with three seasons of Ted Lasso. , because they will be the only ones we will have. Unless Apple TV+ starts producing spin-offs?
