Odair regrets Santos’ swing at an important time of the year

Santos ended up eliminated by Bahia after drawing 1-1, but lost on penalties, this Wednesday (31st), at the Arena Fonte Nova, for the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. The result proved frustrating after Peixe went for an equalizer in the closing minutes and again saw João Paulo pick up a fifth penalty for Tricolor de Aço.

In a post-match press conference, coach Odair Hellmann lamented Peixe’s swing at a defining moment in the season. Furthermore, he said that the team must show the ability to come out of the negative phase and is preparing for the pressure from the fans.

“The pressure comes from football, from the results. We fluctuated, we resumed after the Paulistão. We have to believe in our condition, in the Brazilian and in the South American. Tomorrow we work more. We have taken steps forward in this reconstruction, now we have to go back. These are painful steps, but they must be taken,” said the coach, who continued.

“We have to demonstrate that we have the ability to resume, have faith in the group, in our work and concentrate on what we are doing well. We will look for results, because only in this way will we obtain this regularity result. Every reconstruction process has moments of fluctuation, of difficulty. We are in this moment. I, as commander, will work on this: trust in the job”, concluded the coach.

Odair sees a bad game between the teams

Finally, the coach analyzed the match and believes that the two teams played a match below expectations. After all, the game ended up being very truncated and Odair couldn’t get Santos’ football flowing.

“It’s an elimination that saddens us. We’ve reached qualification. The first half was a truncated match, a competitive match in which we fit in well, we didn’t allow him construction and breadth. When it came to recovering possession , to create opportunities, we did not,” said Odair, who followed.

“Even Bahia didn’t do it. It was a truncated match, with transitions, but without being technical in the first half. In the second half, they opened up more. It’s natural. Controlling possession. We lost the ball and conceded goals,” concluded the technician.
