The magic of classic Disney fairy tales sometimes fades and gives way to a darker and scarier environment, and a clear example of this is “The Little Mermaid”, as it holds fascinating secrets and, delving into each of them, we find surprising theories which have been discovered by the most passionate fans.
We all know the story of Ariel, a young woman who is willing to give her life under the sea for love, she sacrificed everything to marry a man. But there are less explored aspects to this story, particularly those related to his mother.
The theory linking the Little Mermaid to Peter Pan and Hercules is going viral
There is a strange theory that points to a possible person responsible for the death of Queen Athena, Ariel’s mother, and it all relates to “Peter Pan”. While it may seem like just fan speculation, this theory has some chilling evidence, and at the end of the day, it doesn’t sound all that far-fetched.
First, you have to look at the release dates of both films, since ‘Peter Pan’ was released in 1954, well before ‘The Little Mermaid’ in 1990, meaning the events of the latter had not yet happened.
In “Peter Pan”, a red-haired mermaid who bears a striking resemblance to Ariel appears, although her name or connection to the story of the Little Mermaid is never actually mentioned.
Also, the third installment of “The Little Mermaid” (2008) suggests that Triton’s wife was killed by pirates. If we consider the story of “Peter Pan”, Captain Hook is presented as one of the main enemies of the mermaids.
The tragic death of Ariel’s mother occurs on her parents’ wedding anniversary when a pirate ship approaches the place where the mermaids live. Athena goes out to rescue one of the trapped mermaids and retrieve a musical box of great sentimental value. Unfortunately, he is crushed to death by the ship, thus unleashing Triton’s wrath on the people.
Considering the striking resemblance between Queen Athena and the mermaid from ‘Peter Pan’, fans have come to the conclusion that it is the same person and that the person responsible for her death is none other than Captain Hook.
But this theory doesn’t stop there, it also raises an interesting connection between Ariel and Hercules. It turns out that Ariel is the daughter of King Triton, while Hercules is the son of Zeus. Following the line of Greek mythology, Ariel’s father, Triton, is the son of Poseidon, who in turn is the brother of Zeus. Thus, we could say that Hercules is Ariel’s uncle.
