Released under the direction of Sony Pictures Animation, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse doesn’t hold back on the Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spoiler alert, the following reveals elements of the Spider-Verse plot. If you don’t want to know anything until you see the movie, skip ahead.
Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield
First of all, the most obvious hints are about Spider-Man working live on the big screen. If Tom Holland’s Weaver doesn’t make an appearance, we could see some small scenes from Sam Raimi’s trilogy with Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield is also in the game via a few scenes in The Amazing Spider-Man diptych.
JK SIMMONS in Jameson
Actor JK Simmons, who played the unforgettable Daily Bugle boss J. Jonah Jameson in the Sam Raimi films, makes a voice cameo in Spider-Verse. He lends his voice to various variants of Jameson present in the multiverse. We see it especially in Earth 65, where they explain how Spider-Man is a threat to society.
The Lego series also features the character singing lines of dialogue taken from Sam Raimi’s Spidey trilogy. Finally, at the end of the film, Jameson’s call is heard again on Earth 42. He introduces us to the infamous organization of supervillains: the Sinister Six Cartel.

A little intel
Even if he is not physically present, Tom Holland is mentioned during the exchanges between Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara. Young Spidey wants to join the Spider-Hero team, which the boss of the team does not see favorably.
“You’ll never be able to be part of the Spider-Team. And especially since no one talks to me about Doctor Strange or that little nerd from Earth 199999!” This sentence uttered by O’Hara clearly refers to the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

hidden task
Task is one of the main enemies of this spider-verse. His power gives him the ability to create holes so he can wander through dimensions. In the script to introduce his origin story, the bad guy utters the sentence that became almost iconic in Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man: “The power of the sun in the palm of my hand.”

Doc Oc’s second shot is heard as Miles Morales is chased by the entire Spider-Hero team. On the run, he passes a training center full of supervillains. There he meets an octopus that confronts him just like in the Sam Raimi movie: “Hello, Peter.”

Alfred Molina is a Ph.D
Peter and MJ
Another reference to the first Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire, is hidden in the Spider-Verse. Miles Morales and his accomplice Gwen Stacy at one point find themselves in the same position as Peter Parker and MJ during the famous upside-down kiss in the rain sequence.

In the animated film, not a kiss, but a more down-to-earth discussion for Miles: he’s spying on his partner for information about the multiverse. Obviously, outside of the MCU, the Spider-Verse is full of references and allusions to the Marvel Universe, whether it’s in the comics, movies, or series.
Spider-Verse hits theaters May 31. On its first day of operation, it attracted nearly 120,000 theatergoers.
