The president will also meet with Lula this month
BRASÍLIA, 05 JUN – Indigenous leader Raoni Metuktire, of the Kayapó ethnic group, was received by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, as part of the preparations for a meeting on the green economy to be held in Paris at the end of June and which will see the president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
“We are attentive to what Chief Raoni tells us, 18 days before the Paris summit for a new global financial pact that the world needs,” Macron wrote on social media this Sunday (4).
“Preserving tropical forests and ensuring respect for the rights of indigenous peoples is his life’s work, his fight for humanity,” he added.
Raoni, originally from the Alto Xingu region of Mato Grosso, has gained international recognition for his work advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples and conserving the Amazon.
At 93, the indigenous leader is always cited as a possible Nobel Peace Prize winner.
The meeting with Macron takes place after a week marked by the approval in Congress of a provisional measure that reduced the powers of the ministries of indigenous peoples and the environment, raising the protests of the indigenous communities.
