Spider-Verse 2 debuts at the top of the US box office

In its first weekend, the animated “Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse” is already topping the US box office. The Marvel feature film, which opened on Thursday (1st), earned more than double the second place on the list: the live-action “The Little Mermaid”, which hit theaters on May 25th.

The big-screen sequel to the Miles Morales story raised $120 million (about 600 million reals, at current prices) in its first weekend after its release. The box office of the feature film starring Halle Bailey, in second place, was around US$40 million (R$200 million).

Check out the five recent top-grossing films in the US, according to Box Office Mojo:

  1. “Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse”: $120 million
  2. “The Little Mermaid”: US$40 million (R$200 million);
  3. “Boogeyman: Your Fear Is Real”: US$12 million (R$60 million);
  4. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”: US$10 million (R$50 million);
  5. “Fast & Furious 10”: $9.2 million

According to information from Variety, the film exceeded expectations by achieving the second-biggest opening weekend of the year, behind only “Super Mario Bros.”, with 146 million dollars (730 million reals). This is also the third biggest opening weekend for any Spider-Man film.

This is an exceptionally good opening for an animation continuation. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” took a famous superhero, gave the narrative an original visual style and voice, and created a unique experience.

Spider-verse 2 review

The production is receiving positive reviews, following in the line of its long-running predecessor ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, which won the Academy Award for ‘Best Animation’ in 2018.

Audiences gave the film an “A” grade on CinemaScore, while critics gave it a 95% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson are directing the animation, which stars Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld to voice Miles and Gwen, while the rest include Brian Tyree Henry, Issa Rae, Jason Schwartzman, Daniel Kaluuya and Oscar Isaac.

In this new chapter, Morales embarks on an adventure across the multiverse, together with the spider woman Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and a new team of Spider-People, made up of variants of different dimensions.

However, everything changes when the heroes clash over how to deal with a new threat. And Miles is at an impasse. Plus, they must face a villain more powerful than anything they’ve ever encountered before.

To save the one he loves most in the world, Morales must redefine what it means to be Spider-Man. And he defies all who try to stop him.

“Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse” is still showing in Brazilian cinemas. “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” will be released in theaters on March 29, 2024.
