What is it about?
Loosely inspired by real events, the Barracuda Queens series tells the story of a group of young women in the 90’s who went on a robbery spree with a spirit of rebellion, but also a taste for adventure and revenge on the men who led them astray. . The series paints a picture of a world where some criminals get away with it… and some don’t.
The Burglar Gentlewomen
Upscale suburb of Djurholm, Sweden, 1995. Over the course of several days, a gang of privileged teenage girls commit a series of robberies, stealing jewelry, artwork, furniture, and other valuable decorative items to pay off their debts. Problem? Young women rob their neighbors!
Their names are Lolo (Alva Bratt), Clara (Tindra Monsen), Frida (Sandra Zubowicz) and Mia (Thea Stiaarne) and they form the Barracuda Queens gang called the beach, where they like to party and watch boys. Series title created by Amanda Adolphson. After yet another villainy gone wrong, the girls find themselves broke and in debt.
Since they don’t want to ask their parents for help and admit their stupidity to them, they can’t think of a better idea than to rob their new neighbor Amina (Sarah Gustafsson). Things could have gone horribly wrong, but “luckily” for them, Amina joins four young women in a series of robberies targeting their filthy rich neighbors whose behavior is deplorable, sexist and violent.
Because if the Swedish series is full of nostalgia in its six episodes with its atmosphere, style and music of the 1990s, it also reflects the shortcomings of the society of the time, which objectified and reduced women, sensitive to the disgusting. , and victims of approval and abuse.
Through these robberies, Lolo, Clara, Frida, Mia, and Amina continue their quest for freedom and independence, forming a united group behind the galvanic banner of “Girl Power.” But by being too eager to seek excitement, young women, students and model girls risk burning their wings during the day or following the same path as their parents, who also have many secrets to hide.
