With the box office successes of its live-action adaptations of its classics, Walt Disney Pictures is focused on exploring each one further. A great example of this is ‘The Lion King’ which won live-action in 2019, already has a second film on the way and a promising future.
Sean Bailey The president of Walt Disney Pictures, said that “The Lion King” has the potential to expand into “a great and epic saga” like “Star Wars”. “There’s a lot of room to go if we can find the stories,” Bailey said in an interview with The New York Times.
Bailey’s statement suggests that a possible expansion of the “The Lion King” universe may be on the way, but there are no confirmations of further productions yet. Meanwhile, ‘Mufasa’ – the prelude to ‘The Lion King’ – is in full swing and should be out next year.
“Mufasa: The Lion King”
“Mufasa” will have an exclusive production on its story and will be the first expansion project for the franchise. The live-action that will explore the origins of Simba’s father is already in development and is directed by Barry Jenkins.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” will be released in theaters on July 5, 2024.
