New on Netflix: She’s the Best Harley Quinn!

The half-figs-half-grapes success of Suicide Squad hasn’t demotivated Warner to produce a spin-off centered around its female protagonist, the campy Margot Robbie. In Birds of Prey and Harley Quinn’s fantasy story, a young woman once again steps into the colorful costumes of a DC super-villain, and this time surrounds herself with a 100% girl-powered team.

Released in 2020, this fun and explosive film is narrated by Harley herself. When Gotham’s most evil – and most narcissistic – nemesis Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor) and his trusted sidekick Zass set out to exterminate a certain Cass, the city searches for a trail. a girl Harley, The Huntsman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Journey Smollett) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) team up to destroy the romance…

Its director, Cathy Yan, is the second woman to direct a DC film after Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and the first Asian woman to direct a superhero film.

The latter has never hidden his ambition for the supervillain, citing Clockwork Orange and Taxi Driver as two of his main visual references. With the help of director of photography Matthew Libatik, he wanted to give Birds of Prey and Harley Quinn’s fantasy story a vintage and modern edge.

Despite a mixed score of 2.7/5 on AlloCiné, Birds of Prey is like its hero: fun, light, colorful and ultra-referential. Margot Robbie performs most of her stunts herself, but allows stuntman Renee Moneymaker to perform more difficult stunts. We’re giving you a glimpse of what it has to offer in the trailer above…

Birds of Prey and The Fantastic Emancipation of Harley Quinn are available on Netflix.
