I’m not satisfied with playing in two huge franchises – Game of Thrones in the guise of the wonderful Brienne of Tarth, which will gain her enormous fame, and Hunger Games (she replaced Lily Rabe in the 3rd and 4th parts, in the skin of Commander. Lime, a former winner of the famous game) , actress Gwendoline Christie was able to add a character from the Star Wars universe to the hunt list.
A role that was originally written for a man
In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, JJ Abrams cast him in the role of a new character to star in: Captain Phasma. Serving the First Order and leading the Stormtrooper Corps, he acts under the orders of Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren.
The character was actually designed to play a male role originally; Rumors at the time suggested that the role should be played by Benedict Cumberbatch. But Christie’s role was cast in response to the controversy raging at the time, pointing to the lack of female characters in the film’s cast. Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan told the site about it vulnerability.
A few weeks before filming began, Abrams and Kasdan made the decision to cast Gwendoline Christie in the role. “When the idea of turning Phasma into a woman was brought up, the reaction was unanimous: everyone was like, ‘Yeah, that’s great!’ Kasdan commented.
Below is a small compilation of Captain Phasma’s appearances in Episodes VII and VIII, still in her shiny chrome armor.
An extraordinary origin… and a Cinephile!
So one question remains: where does this name come from? Imagine its origin is delicious and ultra sharp. This is JJ Abrams’ tribute to one of his favorite films. A minor cult horror film directed by Don Coscarelli: Fantasia.
Released in 1979, the film spawned five sequels. The saga revolves around the character of The Tall Man, an evil vigilante who turns the dead into zombie dwarves in order to take over the world. A huge success in the United States when it was released in 1979, the film even achieved a very respectable score in France with 536,000 admissions.
What does it look like ? Watch in the trailer below…
Abrams’ passion for the film – which won the Special Jury Prize at the Avoriaz festival – led him to take an active part in restoring it in 4k in 2015 with his production company Bad Robot. A little horror classic from the late 70s available on VOD or physical media.
