One of the biggest adventure series of the year is about to begin: a reimagining of a 600-year-old legend starring Lord of the Rings.

Is there anything else to say about Robin Hood, this British literary character born in the 14th century? We should believe so. On November 2nd, the MGM+ streaming service (available with an additional subscription to Prime Video) will stream the first two episodes of the series, which centers on this notorious outlaw who stole from the poor to give to the rich, and which is summarized here:

After the Norman invasion of England, Robb, a Saxon forester, and Marian, daughter of a Norman lord, fall in love and work together to win the triumph of justice and freedom. While Robbie finds himself at the head of a band of outlaw rebels, Mariana digs into power at court. Both are trying to prevent royal corruption and bring peace to the country.

This 600-year-old legend has been adapted numerous times for film and television, with varying degrees of success. We logically think of a Ridley Scott film with Russell Crowe or a more critical 2018 version with Taron Egerton.

For this new version, MGM+ offers a diverse cast. Jack Patten (his first role) slips into the skin of a thief opposite Lauren McQueen (Mariana). But the actor we’re interested in is none other than Sean Bean.

The British actor, who rose to fame thanks to his fantastic roles in Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, steps into the shoes of the Sheriff of Nottingham here. A most lovable character who can regain his nobility in this Robin Hood as he plays a more morally different villain.

What can we expect from this Robin Hood?

If we were to judge this 2025 version of Robin Hood by the trailer alone, we’d say it’s honest fun with good means. We’re obviously expecting a good dose of adventure, but showrunners John Glenn and Jonathan English made it clear from the start that their series focused on the relationship between hero and loved one:

“Robin Hood brings modern energy to the classic tale of this villainous outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor and the epic love story between him and the brave and daring Marianne. It’s a smart, sweeping romantic adventure that brings historical authenticity, psychological history and special attention to the relationship between Robin and Marianne.”

The first two episodes of Robin Hood will be available Sunday on MGM+, and the next will be broadcast weekly.
