What happened

In the searches carried out by the police, a 32-year-old man was found with two boxes of chocolates, worth about R$ 30, who informally confessed to the officers about the theft. Also according to the report of the incident, he would have resisted the police, threatened to run away and even take possession of a gun, reasons for which he would have been tied up with ropes.

The agents requested the reinforcement of another vehicle. In total, four police officers participated in the action.

The Military Police of São Paulo issued a statement, stating that the conduct of the officers is not compatible with the institution’s training and values. He also communicates that an investigation has been opened to ascertain the behavior of the agents and that two of them have been removed from operational activity.

According to the prosecutor, the tied man was arrested in the act for theft. Another 38-year-old man was also arrested and a 15-year-old teenager was arrested. They would wear clothing similar to what the convenience store clerk described and be arrested in the act. The 38-year-old allegedly admitted to having stolen two packets of coffee and resold them.

He is 32 years old and said he was “dissatisfied with the way they treated the citizen”. The witness reported that he was intimidated by the officers and that the bound man screamed in pain.

According to him, the man was tied up for at least three hours, until the police chief called him to collect his testimony.

Repercussion

Deputy Tábata Amaral (PSB – SP) called the case “barbaric” and said he would call the military police’s internal affairs department. According to her, it is unacceptable for this to happen in the largest city in Latin America.

The deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB – SP) classified the fact as “inadmissible”.

“A black man is bound hand and foot and carried, as if he were prey, by uniformed thugs. It is institutionalized racism, it is barbarism promoted by the hands of the state. We will demand exemplary identification and punishment from the PM-SP,” he wrote. on Twitter.

After the video went viral, experts said there were other ways to immobilize the man accused of theft, since the police were outnumbered and could have handcuffed his legs as a last resort.
