WhatsApp has finally started experimenting with the option to send high-resolution photos, but the feature isn’t 100% compression-free yet
OR Whatsapp finally experience the possibility of sending photos in high resolution. The novelty has long been requested by the community, but it is not yet completely free from the compression of the algorithms.

The higher quality must be activated in the photo editing menu, the one that appears before sending the media file. The option is located at the top of the screen, symbolized by the acronym “HD”.

When you select the button, the app shows a section with the available qualities: “Standard quality” (“Standard quality”, in free translation) and “HD quality” (“High resolution quality”). Below each option is the amount of pixels the image will have after uploading.
Original resolution but with compression
However, high resolution WhatsApp messages are not free from compression. The messenger will still use algorithms to reduce the file size (in this case on lighting data).
Sending or receiving a high resolution image requires more data than usual, so this option must be manually enabled each time you send. When the file is in the higher format, it will be labeled with an “HD” symbol in the lower left corner, similar to GIFs.
It only works with photos
Interestingly, the change only applies to photos, so videos have been excluded. There are no plans to implement a similar feature for other formats. Even so, you can still resort to the “Documents” alternative to send videos in original quality.
According to the WABetaInfo website, which first discovered the novelty, the feature is contained in the WhatsApp Beta for iOS in version 23.11.0.76 and for Android in version 2.23.12.13. The implementation happens gradually for the testers.
For now, there is no forecast for the release of high-resolution WhatsApp photos to the public. However, once the feature has been rolled out to testers, it shouldn’t be long before it lands in the stable version of the app.
