Research: Cinema shouldn’t have the same box office as before

In its opening weekend alone, ‘Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse’ grossed more than $121 million. Initial projections estimated nothing above US$90 million (R$442 million).

While this is positive in regards to a return to theaters (particularly for Marvel and Sony), it also demonstrates how widespread uncertainty is about where the film industry will look in the future.

This uncertainty mostly comes from experts and people involved in the entertainment industry. A poll conducted by YouGov for “Across the Movie-Verse” del Varietywhich polls working adults in the industry about the film landscape, shows that most don’t believe movie theater subscription levels will ever go back to what they were before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Why is it bad?

In addition to the risk they pose to theaters and the film industry, the numbers and estimates translate into pressure from both the industry and major release venues.

Eventually, this could even crowd out lower-grossing films that would have no chance to compete with the blockbusters.
