Tonight on TV: The comedy phenomenon that brought 12 million viewers to theaters

In 1952, Julien Duvivier adapted faithfully Don CamilloA collection of short stories by the Italian journalist and writer Giovannino Guaresi, published a year earlier in France. Set in the small Italian town of Bresello, the story tells of the friendship, sometimes tinged with rivalry, between the communist mayor Peppone and the priest Don Camillo.

Julien Duvivier, who had already portrayed him in Un Carnet de bal, casts Fernandel as a clergyman, and the actor does not at all correspond to the description of the character in the original work. The director chooses the Italian actor Gino Servi to answer.

Co-starring two headliners (who are truly sympathetic during filming), Le Petit monde de Don Camillo draws crowds when it hits theaters. With over 12 million admissions, the film topped the French box office in 1952, catapulting Fernandez into the ranks of the biggest comic book stars of the day. In Italy, the feature film fared even better, crossing the 13 million mark.

This incredible success gave birth to a saga consisting of four other episodes: The Return of Don Camillo, The Great Battle of Don Camillo, Don Camillo Monsignor, and Don Camillo in Russia.

The Small World of Don Camillo Julien Duvivier with Fernandel, Vera Talci, Franco Interlenghi…
