Idol: Which pop star is Lily-Rose Depp’s character inspired by?

Created by Sam Levinson (Euphoria) and The Weeknd, The Idol stars Lily-Rose Depp as Joseline, a pop star embroiled in a destructive relationship with nightclub boss Tedros.

The latter is portrayed by a singer, as well as a co-screenwriter. In front of this fictional world, it is impossible not to think about the real singers, whose lives, which have been over-hyped by the media, were often riddled with scandals.

The first thing that comes to mind, the most obvious, is Britney Spears being quoted from the first episode during the conversation. During a short sequence, viewers discover that Jocelyn also appeared at a young age in the TV series – or in the movie? – called Rock House. A reference to all of those Disney programs, from Camp Rock to Hannah Montana, which has brought out a lot of young talent, from Miley Cyrus to Demi Lovato.

At a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, where the series was presented out of competition, Lily-Rose Depp revealed that the heroine’s story was not based on any particular person.

Nevertheless, in Interview with W MagazineHe claims to have watched Britney Spears, as well as two other icons of the scene: “Of course I’m a Britney fan! Who doesn’t like it? But I also thought of Beyoncé, Mary, and all the huge pop stars of our time. I wanted Jocelyn to be this woman who dominates the room, who is never afraid to shine.”

The actor also explains that he was inspired by “Fatal women“like”Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct and Jeanne Moreau in Jules et Jim“, but also Bridget Bargo. “I wanted Jocelyn to have the same attitude– adds Lily-Rose Depp.
