The Associação Brasileira Intersex emerged in 2018, with the aim of opening and expanding debates on intersex people in Brazil
Thanks to the movement of activists Shay, Amiel, Alex, Haru and Dionne, parents of intersex children today have an institution that guides them and assists them with any doubts about how to deal with this discovery.
At the time, shortly before the birth of the Associação Brasileira Intersex (Abrai), activists created the União Brasileira Intersex (UBI).
In 2018, Associação Brasileira Intersex was founded with the aim of expanding and promoting discussions about intersex people in Brazil.
This was the case of Thaís Emília, mother of Jacob, an intersex child, and current president of Abrai. The psychoanalyst and UNESP professor explains that the purpose of the association’s presence at the fair is to bring more information to the public.
“Since this is the civil registry of the intersex child, we bring the technical note of the psychology council and some legal guidelines on how to proceed in these cases,” informed Thaís.
More than 200 families have already been assisted by the Abrai project, and you can find out more by clicking here.
What is intersex?
The term “intersex” refers to a biological characteristic related to sexual and reproductive diversity. Intersex individuals have anatomical differences that do not fit traditional definitions of male or female. This can include chromosomes, genitals, or internal reproductive organs that don’t match the typical category for a given sex.
Also, they can have characteristics of both genders. For example, a person who looks female but has a predominantly male anatomy.
