São Paulo beat Tolima this Thursday, at Morumbi, 5-0, for the fifth round of Group D of the Copa Sudamericana. The Tricolor goals were scored by Calleri, Luciano, Caio Paulista (2) and David.
With the result, São Paulo fell to 13 points, remaining isolated at the top of the group, and confirmed their qualification for the next phase of the Copa Sudamericana. Now it remains to secure first place in the group to go directly to the round of 16. If they finish as runners-up, they will play a play-off against one of the third-placed Libertadores in the group stage.
Tigre still have a mathematical chance of qualifying in first place in Group D, but for this they will need to complete a practically impossible mission: defeat São Paulo by four or more goals difference amidst Morumbi in the last round on June 27 at 21:30 (Brasilia time).
São Paulo’s next match is scheduled for Sunday, against Palmeiras, also at the Morumbi, for the Brazilian championship, a classic that will serve as the thermometer for the clashes between the two teams for the quarter-finals of the Copa do Brasil, in July.
Sao Paulo massacre
San Paolo had no difficulty in carrying on the victory in the first half. The game started very hard-fought, with Tolima often entering the battle for the ball with too much force, which resulted in many fouls in the first minutes. But after that, Tricolor had complete domination of the match and the goal count started.
In the 27th minute Calleri lets the ball dominate from the left of the field after Luciano’s pass, carries it in the middle and hits for a corner, with no escape for the opposing goalkeeper, signing a great goal for Morumbi to enthrall more than 40,000 fans. Finally, Riascos, from Tolima, ended up expelled for a foul from outside the field disputed at the origin of the auction.
Shortly after, at the age of 35, the second goal for San Paolo arrived. Calleri cuts the light, Luciano dominates at the entrance to the area and takes for a corner to increase the home team’s score. By the way, the number 10 was one of the main names in the match, directly participating in several offensive actions of the team.
To close the first half, in the 37th minute Michel Araújo crossed low in mid area, Calleri made another light cut and Caio Paulista only had to dominate and finish for a corner, leaving the Tricolore very close to victory.
St. Paul turns victory into defeat
São Paulo were not satisfied with the big lead built up in the first half and in the first minutes of the second half they almost turned the elastic victory into a rout with Michel Araújo, who received a sweet pass from Luciano, inside the area, but missed the ball, sending it over the goal, face to face with the goalkeeper.
Only a little later the Tricolor managed to swing the goals for the fourth time. Michel Araújo kept ahead after a dispute in the box and fired for Caio Paulista who came in, set, with no chances for the rival goalkeeper, scoring his second goal of the game.
Before the full whistle, Juan still had time to reach the backline on the left and cross back, finding David, who dominated and took in for a corner, closing the proceedings on a very special night at the Morumbi. From then on, it was enough for Dorival Júnior’s men to manage the excellent lead they had built and wait for the end of the game.
