Flanked by his XXL cast, from Tom Hanks to Scarlett Johansson, Wes Anderson presented Asteroid City, his latest film, in competition on the red carpet at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
Very prolific, the director is already gearing up to release a new feature film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, exclusively on Netflix. A project that marks the first collaboration between the filmmaker and the platform.
Fourteen years after Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson is once again adapting author Roald Dahl. The film, which contains four separate stories, is directed by Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade. In each of these stories, the actors will play a different role.
Cinematographer Robert Yeoman, a loyal collaborator of the director, told The Film Stage:Three of these stories were filmed in the studio. One takes place in the jungle, so recreating it all was a real challenge. And each of these stories has a different style.
We shot on 16mm and when I saw the finished film I immediately texted Wes to tell him I loved 16mm. Again he’s pushing the boundaries and it’s a very different style to what he usually does.”
The operator asserts the uniqueness of this project and says that he is interested in the future reception of the film. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar doesn’t have a release date yet, but word has it that the film may premiere at various festivals this fall, starting with the Venice Film Festival. Meanwhile, Wes Anderson is already working on the preparation of his thirteenth feature film.
Asteroid City is expected in cinemas in France on June 21.
