This is one of Dwayne Johnson’s biggest commercial failures: Is there a sequel planned?

In July 2021, Jungle Cruise landed in the dark rooms, hosted by the unprecedented and explosive duo, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The actress played the brave explorer Lily Houghton. The film follows him as he leaves London to explore the Amazon jungle in search of a miraculous cure.

To get down the river, he hires Frank Wolff (The Rock), a scheming captain as suspicious as his dilapidated old bathhouse. Determined to discover an ancient tree whose extraordinary healing powers could change the future of medicine, Lily embarks on an epic quest.

The unlikely duo will then face countless dangers—not to mention supernatural forces—hidden beneath the lush splendor of the rainforest. As the secrets of the lost tree slowly unravel, the stakes for Lily and Frank get even higher. Not only their fate, but the fate of all humanity is at stake.

Jungle Cruise, adapted from the popular Disney Parks attraction, was filmed on a substantial budget of $200 million. If its initialization was quite correct at the time of its release, the attendance failed afterwards.

The cruise is filling

The work was a commercial failure, ending its run with 220 million tickets. Its simultaneous release on Disney+ at the time didn’t help matters.

In August 2021, this did not prevent the studio from announcing, perhaps a little earlier, a sequel project. As of today, Jungle Cruise 2 is still announced to be in development on the IMDb websiteWith Jaume Collet-Serra on the controls, like the first opus.

However, we have not heard anything about the project for 2 years. Moreover, after a new commercial failure with Black Adam (also directed by Colette-Serra), Dwayne Johnson seems to be on the ropes in Hollywood. To gain some slack at the box office, Rocky recently agreed to return to the Fast and Furious franchise and get a solo spin-off about his character, Luke Hobbs.

Consequently, the latter will be very busy, and Jungle Cruise no longer seems to be a priority for him, as it is for Disney. It is therefore unlikely that a sequel will see the light of day in the near future. It can even stay in Mickey’s desk drawer for a very long time without coming out.
