The White House said on Friday that Russia could deepen its defense cooperation with Iran and that Moscow has received hundreds of one-way strike drones that are being used to target Ukraine.
Citing recently made public information, the White House said the drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were built in Iran, sent across the Caspian Sea, and then used by Russian forces against the Ukraine.
“Russia has been using Iranian UAVs in recent weeks to attack Kiev and terrorize the Ukrainian population, and the military partnership between Russia and Iran appears to be strengthening,” White House spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.
“We are also concerned that Russia is working closely with Iran to produce Iranian UAVs from inside Russia.”
Kirby said the United States has information that Russia was receiving materials from Iran to build a drone factory that could be fully operational by early next year.
The United States previously fined Iranian executives of a defense contractor for supplying drones to Russia. At the time, Iran admitted to sending drones to Russia but said they were sent before it invaded Ukraine in February.
Moscow has denied that its forces have used Iranian drones in Ukraine. A White House official said Iran has transferred several hundred drones to Russia since August.
