Marvel 2099 | The universe based on the possible future was successful in the 90s

The alternate timeline created in 1992 was quite successful, but many people don’t even know what the 2099 Marvel Universe is all about

While the multiverse concept is much better digested today, especially with the wonder currently exploring their Earths and timelines a lot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU, its acronym in English) comics and attractions, it’s a feature more connected to DC Comics. One of the first alternative realities explored with greater density and success was the Marvel Universe 2099, released in the 90s.

like animation Spider-Man through the Spider-Verse helps expand the Marvel Multiverse and Spider-Man 2099 is one of the main characters in the storyline, many people were curious about what the 2099 Universe is – after all, even though this timeline is popular, it has been forgotten and has a lot of people they didn’t even know it existed.

Just to put some backstage context, in the early 90s Marvel was looking for different ways to explore its characters, mostly along lines that could offer new readers a new timeline – there was already concern about aging fans at the time, that did not renew themselves yes.

Additionally, the events connected to the crossovers were quite successful, and both Marvel and DC were riding this wave, which, while satisfying longtime fans, wasn’t friendly to new readers. After all, the fun of these sagas was seeing different events intersect with well-known characters, and if you didn’t have at least some idea of what was going on, it just got complicated — especially in an age without the internet to help.

How did the 2099 Marvel Universe come into being and die?

At the time the 2099 line was born, time travel was still in fashion, after the trilogy of Back to the Future AND Terminator 2. The best-selling X-Men stories at the time had successfully explored this theme for a long time, so Stan Lee he thought of a possible future that would intrigue readers: “Do the characters and events of these stories have a link with the present?”.

Lee originally thought about 100 years in the future, so the line would be called Marvel 2093, but eventually it was called 2099 anyway. Spider-Man 2099, cyberpunk and darker than the traditional Wall Climber stories, won over readers for the good setting and for the traits and characterization of Miguel O’Hara’s reality.

The hostile, dystopian and corrupt environment, dominated by mega corporations, has proved adequate to host other versions of well-known heroes and villains, such as Doctor Doom 2099, Punisher 2099, X-Men 2099, Hulk 2099 and Ghost Rider 2099 — the stories some mutants have even teased that some famous X-Men are alive in this timeline.

However, while it was quite successful, the 2099 Marvel Universe lineup didn’t grow with good planning; plus the lack of good creative teams like Peter David and Rick Leonardi, who produced Spider-man 2099it was clear that even Marvel itself hadn’t adequately prepared for the good adhesion of the franchise.

Among the successful storylines were the journey of Doctor Doom, characterized as an anti-hero; a Thor fueled by a religion named after him created by fanatical followers; and mysterious X-Men-related characters with a strong suggestion that they’re known time-surviving mutants — there was even a connection between a possible Gambit and time-traveling plots, like Cable and Bishop.

Then, little by little, the titles began to repeat the same problems of running out of ideas and a chronology that, in a short time, no longer seemed friendly to new readers.

Marvel Universe 2099 still lives on, but without much prominence

After alternating good and bad moments between 1992 and 1999, the Marvel Universe 2099 was left aside, with a somewhat hasty and lazy ending. Interest in this reality only returned as Marvel began popularizing its Multiverse more fondly, as the films reinforced the idea of seeing worlds and characters facing off against variants of traditional heroes.

Between 2004 and 2019, the Marvel Universe 2099 appeared in isolated storylines and publications, always highlighting Spider-Man 2099, which was the one that appeared the most on the main Earth of Casa das Ideias, 616. To the secret wars of 2015 helped reposition that line and make it relevant again, even more so with the addition of Conan 2099.

Multiversal groups, such as the Exiles, the Spider-Verse, and the Captain Britain Corporation helped save the 2099 Marvel Universe, which came to be considered Earth-928, rather than a possible future Earth 616.

It is not possible to know if Marvel Comics will invest again in this line, however, the 2099 Universe can be considered the first alternate Earth to take more flesh in the Marvel Multiverse, which has “greased” its parallel realities, timelines and variants. of heroes and villains that we love so much – and of course, Casa das Ideas must already have a special plan for when the year 2099 rolls around.
