Disney has released the first trailer for the short film “Carl’s Date” (“Encontro do Carl”, in literal translation), which continues the story of “Up: Altas Aventuras” (2009). The animation is yet another Disney production with Pixar and pays tribute to the actor Ed Asner, original voice of the curmudgeon Carl Frederickson, who passed away in 2021. In the preview the character appears dazed, prepares for a date and receives the help of Dug, his talking dog.
In the storyline, Carl is reluctant to go on his first date after the death of his wife, Ellie, while Dug tries to help his co-worker with some suggestions that worked with his acquaintances. Trouble is, Dug’s friends are dogs too.
The short is directed by Bob Peterson, who co-wrote and co-directed the original animation. The director also lends the voice to Dug.
The short will be released in theaters together with the animation “Elementos” on June 15th.
The shorts accompany Pixar previews
With the announcement of “Carl’s Date”, Disney continues the tradition of always presenting an animated short before the screening of its feature films. The latest studio film that came with a short was ‘The Incredibles 2’ (2018). The extra cartoon was “Bao”, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2019.
“Up” is one of Pixar’s most celebrated films. A success with audiences and critics, the film made history by becoming the second animated film (after “Beauty and the Beast”) to be nominated for an Oscar for best picture. Overall, it received 5 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Award nominations and won two categories: Best Animated Feature and Best Score.
Tribute to Ed Asner
The short film is one of the latest works of actor and voice actor Ed Asner. He passed away in August 2021, at the age of 91, in the city of Los Angeles. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
The actor was best known for his roles in American television, most notably as news editor Lou Grant in the legendary sitcom ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ (1970) and its spin-off show. His latest works include guest appearances in the series ‘Grace & Frankie’ (2019) and ‘Cobra Kai’ (2018).
