The grandfather reports the grandchildren’s strategy in the Colombian jungle and says that the daughter did not live 4 days

The children were rescued after a plane crash killed their mother and they used survival strategies

The maternal grandfather of the children rescued from the jungle in Colombia after suffering a plane crash, Narciso Mucutuy, detailed how they survived with indigenous strategies taught by their families, for 40 days. Her eldest niece, aged 13, took care of her siblings.

In an interview with the Colombian portal Week, the grandfather said that the daughter, mother of the children, would not survive for 4 days, as the father of the children, Manuel Ranoque, had told the press. “It’s a lie,” he said. “Lely [a neta mais velha] he said when the plane crashed, the three [adultos] died.”

The girl would divide the food and leave tracks along the way, as she told her grandfather. The babies fell on top of each other in the crash and managed to pick up some supplies such as cassava flour and milk in the 11-month-old’s baby bottle. The boy turned 1 while the brothers got lost in the forest. Narciso Mucutuy says as soon as supplies ran out, they started looking for wild fruits.

Indigenous knowledge passed on by the family to the older girl helped her recognize the fruits that could be eaten, according to her grandfather. She also knew how to build a hut out of leaves. The girl even made a “cup” of leaves to give the baby water when the milk in the bottle ran out.

The children said they had not seen snakes or jaguars, common predators in that region.

The grandfather said he believes Wilson the dog wanted to notify the army that he had found the children. The Colombian army dog used in the search — which is still missing — stayed with the children for a few hours and then disappeared, Narciso said. “[Wilson] followed them wherever they went and then returned to warn the army or someone else. Since he can’t talk, they didn’t understand him,” he said.

When the children were found, Lesly was starting to hallucinate, according to his grandfather to the Colombian portal. She had “visions” like lightning and during the rescue she and the other children were no longer able to move through the forest, she said.

The children’s mother died instantly.

Magdalena’s father, the children’s mother, Narciso says it was a lie that her daughter survived for four days and that she would talk to the children, advising Lesly to get them away from the crash site. Narcissus recounts that his nephew told him that “the three [adultos] he died right there when the plane crashed. If the person who said my daughter Magdalena was alive for three or four days, that’s a lie.”

The maternal grandfather intends to take custody of the children, and must apply for custody from social assistance. Currently the children are hospitalized, under the care of social workers.

Narciso also accused Manuel Ranoque of assaulting his daughter, the children’s mother. Ranoque admitted there were problems at the house, but said it was a private matter. “Verbally sometimes yes. Physically very little, because we had more verbal fights.
