While Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid has surpassed one million in France and grossed over $400 million worldwide, Disney is launching an animated series. Simply titled Ariel, the program for Disney Junior is a sequel to the feature film as it features a black heroine like Halle Bailey.
The information was announced at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which is currently being held in France. Aimed at a younger audience than Rob Marshall’s blockbuster, this fiction follows the adventures of young Ariel in search of many treasures at the bottom of the ocean. Each object found will allow him to solve his problems.
In her adventure, the mermaid will be surrounded by several characters well known to fans, from King Triton to Ursula, Sebastian and Flounder, but also new protagonists.
With the production of The Black Mermaid, Disney maintains its position in favor of minority representation, despite the many racist attacks directed at actress Holly Bailey.
The Ariel animated series is expected to launch in 2024.
