What is it about?
A young American journalist in distress, left without a passport in the midst of an election in present-day Nicaragua, meets an English traveler in a hotel bar. He seems like the perfect man to help her escape the country. He realizes too late that on the contrary, he is entering a darker, more dangerous world next to him.
Out this Wednesday, Claire Denis’ new feature film, Stars at Noon, brings together a very charming cast: Margaret Quayle (Spotted Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Maid on Netflix) and Joe Alvin (Discovered). A Day in the Life of Billy Lynn).
How the cast of the film was created is exciting! Claire Denis had to be disappointed (the main actor was changed at the last minute) and to find Margaret Cowell, the director talks about love at first sight, pure and simple!
Their meeting could have been stymied, as Margaret Cowell tells us with a smile in our interview at the Cannes Film Festival last year when the film was in competition (see video above).

When she saw Quentin Tarantino’s film, Claire Dennis realized that she had her hero in front of her: “When he showed up hitchhiking with Brad Pitt, I fell in love with him!“
“I met Claire in New York. I couldn’t take him by taxi, I was 30 minutes away and I didn’t want to be late for him! So I sprinted in the middle of the summer and came down with my hair all messed up, sweaty! And he said to me: “Trish” (the name of her character in the film, ed.)! And I said, “Okay, okay, let’s do it, please!“.

First of all, from this film we remember its two actors, whose association sparks. Margaret Cowell is magnetic as always. Joe Alvin also seduces.

But you could say it could have just been a paid pass to the hotel bar and that’s it. And no ! Something happens to them on their first night of love that is more than $50.”
This pair clearly echoes what could have been seen in 1940s spy movies. Stars at Noon clearly plays on these codes, building tension and suspense.
Add to that the dampness of the country, the laziness of the setting and the jazzy music of Stuart Staples of Tindersticks and you have an idea of the charm that comes out of this film.
Stars at noon hits theaters this Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
