AI on PC for productivity beyond generative AI

Generative AIs like ChatGPT have shown potential in recent months, but other AI productivity applications are worth mentioning

In the last few weeks I have had the opportunity to follow the presentations of three giants of the technology industry: OMG, Microsoft AND nvidia — and in all of them there was a specific theme: Artificial Intelligence (AI).

And really, there’s no way to be different; on the one hand, the technology industry wants to highlight the efforts in pursuit of innovation and on the other hand, there is an audience eager to know more about the concept of artificial intelligence and all the possibilities that will be opened by this development, which has generated great enthusiasm since its inception Generative AI. In research recently released by Gartner, according to 21 percent of people surveyed, CEOs stressed that AI is the most disruptive technology set to have a significant impact on business over the next three years.

It’s interesting to walk into an AI-powered website, ask a question, and know that it has an answer tailored to our needs, but that’s only the most visible level. Have you ever stopped to think how much hardware, software, research and development are behind all this?

In addition to generative AI – the one that provides personalized responses – AI is already present in devices to improve the user experience and increase productivity. Those presentations I mentioned showed a bit of the present and future of AI in notebooks, innovations that are also accelerating exponentially.

Microsoft presented Copilot and, as the name suggests, the central idea is that it should be the co-pilot, assisting the user in various daily functions and fully interconnected with the Office package and Microsoft Teams. Two features caught my attention:

  • Meeting help: At the end of a meeting in MS Teams, Copilot (who was there listening to everything) can generate a minute and send it to everyone involved.
  • Presentation assistance: You can ask the assistant to prepare a power point presentation on a certain topic and it will include illustrations, market data and various other available information about your equipment.

Nvidia, on the other hand, began its presentation by recalling its trajectory and strong presence in the gaming world, but reinforces the message of having a much more complete solution. Just look at anything that already exists and has the promise of being improved or on its way:

  • Image Enhancement: Reflections, shadows, sharpness and incidence of light on objects will have much greater fidelity.
  • Energy efficiency: Since the images will be enhanced through artificial intelligence, you won’t need such heavy hardware that consumes power.
  • Noise Cancellation: The software will recognize unwanted sounds like a dog barking and a neighbor’s drill and will simply isolate so that people only hear your voice on the other end of the conference.
  • Eye contact: This was the main “witchcraft” presented. To read a document during video calls, it is natural for the eyes to move downwards, but this feature shows the entire audience their eyes in a natural position, as if they were face to face with everyone in the meeting.

AMD, on the other hand, has introduced the Ryzen processor with built-in AI, with the ability to provide:

  • Productivity: Ability to distribute work for maximum efficiency when running multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Improved video playback: The videos, in addition to being sharper, will run much more smoothly, without robotic effects on the movements of the frames.
  • Long processor life: Longer processor life, which gets better over time.

In addition to these announced improvements, there are already notebook options on the market today that use AI to identify the user’s presence to pause a movie, series or video and resume when back in front of the PC, optimization of the battery and CPU performance control to greater energy efficiency, and also a safety function against “snoops”, which dims the screen only for those who are not in front of the computer, useful for those who like to work in bars or need access to your notebook at the airport , for example.

The fact is that all these resources are only the beginning of the potential of this disruptive technology that can revolutionize the entire ecosystem and our lives, as new Artificial Intelligence applications and resources appear every week, which seem to be advancing faster than it could do Moore’s Law predicted.
