The Squid Game hero directs The Hunt, a suspenseful spy thriller finally available in France

A superstar in his home country since the 1990s, South Korean actor Jung-Jae Lee exploded onto the international scene thanks to the success of the Netflix series Squid Game, in which he plays the protagonist Seong-hoon.

The 50-year-old actor even received two prestigious awards in the United States, namely the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Thanks to this worldwide popularity, Lee Jung-jae was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, during the 75th edition, to present a preview of his first film. This feature film, titled The Hunt, was shown at a midnight screening.

Squid Game Star’s first achievement

For a baptism of fire behind the camera, the actor began a spy thriller set in the 1980s, which tells the story of the risk of two Korean explosions. After the assassination of President Park by the Korean CIA, the military takes power again. North Korea sees an opportunity for future invasion there and sends one of its spies there.

Two top South Korean security officials, Park Pyong-ho and Kim Jung-do, were tasked with tracking down the infiltrator. Then begins a terrifying race against time. The situation between the two Koreas is on the verge of an explosion, and two agents investigate a grave secret that threatens the country’s history…

But Lee Jung-jae isn’t just directing this political thriller, he’s also starring alongside Jung Woo-sung (Steel Rain, Lucky Strike) and John Hye-jin (Ruthless, Final Destruction). Introduced at the Cannes Film Festival, Lee Jung-jae returns to AlloCiné for his stunning debut, the success of Squid Game and his first production, now available in France.

The South Korean actor isn’t going to stop there, as he landed a lead role in Disclaimer, the Alfonso Cuaron series, and a role in Choi Dong Hoon’s next film (Robbers, The Killing). But he will also be a Jedi Master in Star Wars: The Acolyte.
