Ahsoka Tano, a Golden Darth Vader Samurai, Boba Fett, Rey, Darth Maul, Count Dooku, slave Leia… Spectacular!
When you first land at the Star Wars Celebration convention center, you experience something akin to what Luke Skywalker must have felt when, leaving behind the mundane grind of the Tatooine desert, devoid of chance and adventure, he entered accompanied by old Ben Kenobi to the busiest cantina in Mos Eisley: an irremediable symbiosis of perplexity and fascination before that procession of subjects and creatures from any corner of the Outer Rim. In Anaheim, a city southwest of Los Angeles, California, Disney and Lucasfilm have held their particular annual fair dedicated to the Star Wars franchise for four days. A carousel of news and announcements that have coexisted with the brilliant presence of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen due to the recent premiere of ‘Obi Wan Kenobi’ and that have confirmed the importance in the Disney + calendar of several series such as the third season of ‘The Mandalorian’the new proposal in the form of a galactic thriller from ‘Andor’ with Diego Lunathe first steps of David Filoni and Rosario Dawson in ‘ahsoka’ and a new fiction with an eighties spirit with Jude Law starring 10 year olds.
And it is in the middle of this festival of confirmations and denials when, at the end of the presentations and panels of the convention, the spotlights are directed towards a picturesque community of fans congregated around fast food stalls and impromptu photocalls in the middle of the Californian asphalt. Legions and squads of followers in disguise, sheathed in cosplay dreamlike. Dozens of surviving sarlacc stormtroopers, Ahsokas, droids, Twi’Leks, Padmes Amidalas, bounty hunters… and outfits with more or less tradition. Some homemade, handcrafted by the fan who reconciles work life with his devotion to Star Wars; others acquired in official stores, dazzling and opulent, only suitable for spenders of galactic credits. All carried with pride.
From a Darth Maul with several hours of makeup on top or a Captain Phasma in gleaming armor, through a gold-plated samurai-style Darth Vader or a Count Dooku with a striking resemblance to Christopher Lee, to different versions of Leia as her slave outfit in ‘Return of the Jedi’ or the white dress she wore at the end of episode IV at the medal ceremony (Chewie doesn’t forget… or forgive). She could even see a spectacular stormtrooper helmet designed by a group of Mexican artists that they had incorporated all the color, folklore and traditional motifs of their country into the imperial piece.
