We were warned that we were in for a huge surprise during a panel organized by the Illumination studio at the Annecy festival. And yet, nothing could have prepared us for the arrival of American superstar Pharrell Williams on the center stage of Bonlier!
Tube Interpreter happy (from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack) was chosen to give his friend Chris Meledandri, producer and founder of the Illumination Entertainment studio, the golden ticket for his entire career in motion picture animation. A completely unexpected appearance that brought tears to the American producer.
“The first time I met Pharrell to ask him to work together, he was more busy on his phone than I was talking to him.Chris Meledandri recalled. I thought it was not a good sign, but his manager assured me that he was just writing a song that would make him happy!”
2023 will be an unforgettable year for the Illumination studio teams after the phenomenal success of the Super Mario Bros movie. It became the second highest grossing animated film of all time at the worldwide box office (behind The Lion King remake).
But before a sequel is officially launched, or a Zelda movie is announced, Illumination’s next project will be The Migration, a Benjamin Renner feature (Ernest and Celestine) following a family of ducks on a trip across the United States.

Already last year, rapper Kid Cudi appeared on the stage of Bonlier. It was less surprising, however, due to the latter’s collaboration with Netflix for the animated feature Entergalactic, for which he signed on to provide the soundtrack as well as dubbing the main character.
