We know the passion of American viewers for soaps. And we hear them: their grandiose love stories, far-fetched twists, jaw-dropping acting… When Jenny Snyder decides to pitch the CW’s adaptation of a Venezuelan telenovela, the showrunner never imagined. That his hero made millions of viewers laugh and cry for 5 years.
The original premise of Jane the Virgin is as ridiculous as it is implausible: a young woman who has taken a vow of chastity before marriage finds herself pregnant after being inseminated by mistake at a simple gynecological appointment. Add to that the baby’s father had cancer and it was the only sample that got his wife pregnant (otherwise it’s not funny).
It works on paper. and also on the screen. Mainly thanks to its main character, camped by the brilliant Gina Rodriguez. The Puerto Rican actress was a revelation to audiences, winning the 2015 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy. making Jane the Virgin the first CW series to win this award.
Because in season 5, he and his (dys)functional family will make us laugh. You fall under the spell of his father (Jaime Camille), a telenovela actor, full of himself but with a good past, his grandmother (Yvonne Colley) – pious and difficult – but also his mother (Andrea Navedo). I don’t want to grow old or follow the rules of propriety (according to Abuela).
Jane The Virgin is a little candy that does the heart good, as evidenced by the comments left on her AlloCiné page:
“You have to admit that an incredible basic script can make you skeptical and discourage viewers from going further, but one evening of TV depression, I took it, for lack of anything better, and there… JACKPOT!!! They told him, pushed and tied to a desperate housewife, it is impossible to resist!” (Diana T.)
“TV’s Alien Alien, original in every way and a breath of fresh air! I enjoyed this over-the-top telenovela perfectly when I put it on in the background to clean my apartment. It motivated me!” (Durian durian)
“The series could have taught moral lessons, but no, it’s too true. And overall, it’s a lot of fun.” (war m)
“Honestly when I was told about this series I was like Wtf? What’s this bullshit..holala I was wrong! Hilarious! Incredible knots. Love triangles! Fast moving… The actors are very good but the only thing is that I think 2 -After 3 seasons you might get tired… and I think it’s more for teenagers or young adults. But if you really want to relax, watch this series!”(M only)
Throughout Season 5, our Jane’s heart has been torn between Michael – the handsome cop she’s supposed to marry – and Rafael (Justin Baldoni), the father of her child, an ultra-wealthy ex-bad boy who turns everyone on. If Jane the Virgin is about love and family (a telenovela requires it), let’s just say that the writers have mastered all the codes of the genre. You’ll get a voiceover commentating on everything, a story about an evil twin, a character back from the dead (several actually)… not to mention quality guest stars (Britney Spears). and Bruno Mars among others).
Netflix will pull Jane The Virgin from its catalog on June 29. So you only have 15 days left to binge watch…
