The new season of “Black Mirror” is already here! The return of the series takes place in the midst of the conflict of the Writers Guild strike and, coincidentally (or not), the theme addressed in the first episode is anxiety about AI (artificial intelligence).
In addition to better working conditions, the writers’ hiatus also highlights concerns about using generative AI to write screenplays, forcing Hollywood studios to replace people with technology.
Understand the context of the first episode:
“It’s not just the writers who complain. They’re the ones saying, ‘Can’t we be replaced by computers?’ and that’s such a scary thing for humans to ask,” says Murphy.
Other famous actors such as Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves and Hayek also showed dissatisfaction with the use of artificial resources during recording, such as the famous deepfakes.
As much as I really want people to have a good laugh and enjoy our incredibly light-hearted episode when it comes to ‘Black Mirror’, I hope it sparks a proper conversation, or more conversations, about the dire repercussions AI can have if it gets out of control.
Anni Murphy
The first episode of the sixth season of ‘Black Mirror’ is now available on Netflix.
