The mayor asks people to avoid leaving their homes in Porto Alegre


The Civil Protection advises the population to seek shelter in safe places, stay away from poles, trees and signs and advertisements, do not enter flooded areas, be aware of possible variations in slope and avoid using electronic devices connected to the electricity grid.

This Friday (16), the city of Porto Alegre asked the population to avoid transit through the city’s streets due to the warning of excessive rain, which continues to affect urban mobility.




The services of the Civil Protection and the Town Hall intervened during the night in the events related to the storm. Mayor Sebastião Melo has appealed to people to avoid displacement, stressing that assistance and repair work continues without interruption.

The Civil Protection advises the population to seek shelter in safe places, stay away from poles, trees and signs and advertisements, do not enter flooded areas, be aware of possible variations in slope and avoid using electronic devices connected to the electricity grid.

The passage of an extratropical cyclone has caused damage and disruption in Porto Alegre and other regions of Rio Grande do Sul. In the capital, the main events concern the fall of trees, cables and pylons, accumulations of water in various streets, collapsed walls and damage to homes, as well as traffic lights out of order. The population of Porto Alegre can ask for assistance by calling 199 (Civil Protection) or 156 (operational services).

According to the National Center for Natural Disasters Monitoring and Alerts, the capital has recorded 82 millimeters of rainfall accumulated in the past 24 hours, while the average for the entire month of June is 140 millimeters. The rains are expected to continue throughout this Friday throughout the Metropolitan Region, with the possibility of another 100mm of precipitation. From the end of Thursday afternoon (15), all waterways of Porto Alegre are inspected.
