26-year-old cyclist dies after an accident during the Tour de Suisse

Gino Mäder fell into a ravine after descending at a fast pace and died of his injuries

the Swiss cyclist Gino Mader died this Friday, one day after suffering a heavy fall while running for Tour of Switzerland (Tour de Suisse in French). The 26-year-old had fallen into a ravine after making one of the fastest descents of stage five, which ends in La Punt, Switzerland.

“Gino lost his fight because he couldn’t recover from his serious injuries,” announced the Bahrain-Victorious team. “Despite the best efforts of the phenomenal hospital staff, Gino has failed to overcome his biggest and latest challenge. And at 11:30am (local time), we say goodbye to one of the brightest lights on our team.”

Paramedics found the cyclist motionless in the water after Thursday’s heavy fall. They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the athlete before he was flown to hospital by helicopter.

“Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” the rider’s team said in a statement.

Gino’s death was announced around 30 minutes before the start of stage six of the competition this Friday. The start of the journey was postponed and the cyclists observed a minute of silence.

After Thursday’s crash, the course of that stage was criticized by Belgian Remco Evenepoel, one of the leading cyclists in the current competition. “Although a summit was perfectly possible, it was not a good decision to let us finish this perilous descent,” lamented Evenepoel. “As cyclists, we also have to think about the risks we take when descending a mountain.”

Another cyclist also fell at the same point. American Magnus Sheffield suffered a concussion and bruises and was receiving medical treatment at the local hospital.

Lasting eight days, the Tour de Suisse is a preparatory test for the Tour de France, the most traditional road cycling competition in the world. The French race, which crosses other countries, will take place in July.
