Dad’s recovery after surgery should take 1 month, says the doctor

Pope Francis, who was discharged after nine days in hospital, is fine, but needs “at least a month of recovery to save his abdominal muscles”.

The information was disclosed this Friday (16) by the surgeon Sergio Alfieri, responsible for carrying out the surgery in the religious.

“The Pope is fine, but he needs at least a month of recovery to save his abdominal muscles, so that they can heal well, so that he can recover as best as possible for his commitments”, added the expert in an interview with the Vatican media.

According to Alfieri, “the surgery went well” and Jorge Bergoglio shows no changes in his blood sugar, cholesterol, white blood cells, among others.

“He has a very good hemoglobin value, he has no problems. His heart is healthy, he has never had problems, his kidneys are working very well, his lungs are working well”, he said, recalling that the “concern I have is that he recovers well” Alfieri explained that those who are close to the Pope in this first month should limit their commitments a little, not in general, but those that can cause strain on the abdominal wall.

As for the risk of recurrence, Alfieri underlines that “all pathologies, surgical or not, can have a recurrence and since he underwent four surgeries on the abdominal wall, it is important that he recovers very well.

“Clearly it’s a wall weakened by four surgeries.

So theoretically it’s possible, but if we see the right recovery, it’s unlikely,” he stressed.

Francisco left the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome, where he had been hospitalized since June 7 for an operation on his abdomen.

The Catholic leader underwent a laparotomy, surgery to correct a laparocele, a kind of hernia that formed in the scar of a colon operation done in 2021. .
